Wherever possible, she favours medical management first and reserves surgery — such as FESS or septoplasty — for cases that genuinely need it, using techniques designed for faster, more comfortable recovery.

Frequently asked questions
At MD, we’re here to help with your questions about our healthcare services and how we support your health needs.
What is chronic sinusitis?
Chronic sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses lasting more than 12 weeks, causing blocked nose, facial pressure, and reduced smell. It's treated with medication and, in some cases, endoscopic sinus surgery.
What is FESS surgery?
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses an endoscope to open blocked sinuses and improve drainage, without external cuts. It's commonly used for chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps.
Who needs FESS?
FESS may be recommended when chronic sinusitis or nasal polyps don't improve with medication. Dr. Lohiya advises surgery only after a full assessment shows it will genuinely help.
What is a deviated septum?
A deviated septum is when the wall between the nostrils is crooked, causing blocked breathing, snoring, or recurring sinus problems. It's corrected with a procedure called septoplasty.
How is sinusitis treated?
Sinusitis is treated based on its cause — with nasal sprays, medication, and allergy management for most cases, and endoscopic surgery for chronic or severe cases that don't respond.
Can nasal polyps come back after surgery?
Nasal polyps can sometimes recur, which is why ongoing medical management after surgery is important. Regular follow-up helps keep them under control.
Why do I keep getting sinus infections?
Frequent sinus infections can be caused by a deviated septum, nasal polyps, allergies, or narrow sinus openings. An ENT assessment identifies the underlying reason.
Can a blocked nose affect sleep?
Yes. Nasal blockage can cause snoring and disturbed sleep. Treating the cause often improves both breathing and sleep quality.
